Why Volunteer as a Mentor?

Mentors often report that the experience is:

  • Personally rewarding
  • A way to give back and make a tangible impact
  • An opportunity to develop coaching and leadership skills
  • A chance to stay connected to the university and emerging talent

You don’t need prior mentoring experience—just a willingness to listen, share your experiences, support a student’s growth, and show up.

Overview of the Ilitch School Mentorship Program

The previous CMP and ACE mentor programs have been combined into the Ilitch School Mentorship Program. The Ilitch School Mentorship Program is a structured, year-long mentoring experience that supports students’ academic success, career readiness, and professional development. By merging these programs, the Ilitch School offers a holistic mentoring experience that supports students from both a personal development and career preparation perspective.

What this Means for Mentors: Supporting with Career & Industry Guidance

As a volunteer mentor, you will leverage your professional experience and real-world insights.

In this role, you act as a career mentor, helping students:

  • Explore career paths related to their major or interests
  • Understand industry expectations and workplace culture
  • Develop résumés, LinkedIn profiles, and interview skills
  • Make informed decisions about internships, jobs, or graduate school
  • Set academic and personal goals for professional development
  • Build confidence, time-management, and professional habits
  • Stay motivated and accountable throughout the mentorship experience

Mentors are dedicated to helping students successfully transition from college to a career.

Structure & Time Commitment

  • Mentors are matched with one or more students
  • 1:1 Meetings occur at least once per month (virtually)
  • The program runs across an academic year (September – April)
  • The Ilitch School provides resources, events, guidelines, suggested discussion topics, and support—you are not expected to “figure it out” on your own
