Mentorship Programs
At the Mike Ilitch School of Business, we are committed to helping students build the confidence, skills, and professional network needed for long-term career success. Through our two mentorship programs, the Corporate Mentor Program (CMP) and Advancing Career Experience (ACE), students are matched with experienced business professionals for personalized, one-on-one mentoring.
A professional business mentor provides students with insight into building a career in their area of interest. Mentors help you stay up to date with industry trends, understand how your curriculum connects to real-world roles, review your resume, job applications, or LinkedIn profile to help you present yourself professionally. They may also suggest extracurricular activities, recommend publications or blogs to follow.
You should approach the mentor/mentee relationship as a mutual exchange, the more energy, openness, and initiative you bring, the more you'll gain from your mentor’s experience and guidance.

Your Role as a Mentee
A successful mentorship is a two-way street. Your energy, curiosity, and commitment will shape what you gain from the experience. This program is what you make of it—the more you invest, the more you’ll benefit. Take ownership of your growth, and don’t hesitate to ask questions or take the lead in scheduling and conversations.
Here’s how to make the most of your mentorship:
- Take initiative. Contact your mentor within 10 days of being matched and maintain regular communication (at least once a month or more).
- Stay engaged. Keep your mentor updated on your academic progress, job search status, and evolving goals.
- Be professional. Respect your mentor’s time, knowledge, and feedback. While they may help you network, don’t expect direct job offers.
- Be open and proactive. Share your career aspirations and ask meaningful questions to guide discussions.
- Come prepared. Use your mentor's input to shape your decisions from elective classes to resume development.
- Feedback on resumes, LinkedIn profiles, and soft skills to improve your professional presence.
- Complete all milestones. Ensure all milestones are completed with your mentor on the Xinspire Mentor Platform
- Submit the Surveys. Don’t forget to complete both the Midpoint and Endpoint surveys—they’re important for measuring your journey.
